The Mustangs from Pincher Creek scored early to place the Highwood Mustangs into a late first half deficit of 13 -0. Then with 8:29 left in the second quarter my co-pilot intervened, as lighting, thunder, and rain delayed the game for thirty minutes. In the break I told the boys that we were going to shorten the bench, and load up the defence to stop their running game. These young men responded very well, as Coach Bennington would call a masterful game on offence. We would score three touchdowns in those 8 minutes and 29 seconds to an 18-13 lead into the second half.
In the third quarter the Mustangs would continue their onslaught, scoring off the kick-off return as Dane Schott would score. It was now 24-13; the Mustangs from High River were now in control of the game the “Big M” was on their side.
I would like to say that the leadership from our Grade 12’s Roman Lanoutte, Jesse Woodward, Devlin Gannon, (two T.D.’s), Mike Schaefer (1 T.D.) Quentin Leroux, A.J. Flammand, and Quade Kormos were exemplary. Not to leave out grade 11’s Kris Gimbett, Ryan Bianchini, Wes Wakeford and Dane Schott (Salt and Pepper) these young men played their hearts out, and carried the touch for the Mustangs. Also thanks to my coaches: Dave, Rob, Jason, Travis, Darcy, Dwayne, and Steve Cameron.
Well done to all!
This game is dedicated to all of the heroes of High River!
